Iowa DOT search for potholes on state highways

BONDURANT, Iowa — A crew from the Iowa DOT was hard at work on Highway 65 here. A crew of ten people and several vehicles made their way along the road, stopping where they noticed potholes.

“We’re doing a process with potholes here it’s called a chip and oil process and we go along and we use a high strength compressor, we blowed any debris that might be in the hole,” said Chad McCoskey, of the Iowa DOT shop in Altoona. “That way makes a good bonding for the oil and the rock that goes into it.”

The chip and oil process makes the road repairs stronger than cold asphalt.

“What happens is you get that warm weather you have a little bit of moisture that’s below the surface of the road then we’re going to have a freeze coming up here in a couple days,” said McCoskey. “Then it starts to pop the concrete loose because you have that moisture below the surface.”

“We’re trying to obviously make the roadway safe as possible and we’re wanting to take advantage of this nice weather couple days that we have here to try and lessen the amount of potholes that we have here so people can drive safely to their destination,” said McCoskey.
