Forecast: Update on the coming cold blast

DES MOINES, Iowa — We’ve had our last mild day for a bit as we hit 50 degrees at 1:15 p.m. in Des Moines today. Winds have already switched and become northwesterly, and colder air will start pouring into the state this evening. Your weather timeline takes you into a cold Sunday:

Lows tonight will reach the single digits in the north, and wind chills will fall into the teens below zero by morning on Saturday as winds will be gusting above 30 mph at times, as seen below:

On Sunday, we’ll see our first of the new cold weather advisories go into effect at 3 a.m. The criteria are explained below, and are actually different for our northern three tiers of counties and areas north.

Wind chills will be close to 30 below at times in the north Sunday morning, creating dangerous conditions. Bundle up and take care of those outdoor critters, giving them shelter from the cold.

Temperatures will warm a bit as we head into Wednesday and Thursday, as seen in the gallery below.

As for snowfall, we have tiny chances next Wednesday and Thursday as that warmer air pushes in, but better chances for light snow look to come after the 27th, as seen in the European computer model ensemble graphic below.
