Rep. Nunn, Baccam make last push on eve of Election Day

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — In Iowa’s Third Congressional District, the final day meant the final push for the two candidates running for the two-year term in the United States House of Representatives.

Incumbent Congressman Zach Nunn (R) was in Altoona on Monday night at an event with U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R). Grassley spoke with members of the media before the event was underway.

“Since I’m not on the ballot this year I think I have a responsibility to help other Republicans. So I want to help Trump get elected president, carrying Iowa. And I want to see that we have a Republican congress and a Republican state legislature,” said Sen. Grassley. “And I believe that we’re going to do very good in Iowa, regardless of what the Des Moines Register poll shows.”

The recent poll released over the weekend showed that Congressman Nunn was seven points behind the Democratic challenger Lanon Baccam.

Baccam held a rally on Monday evening at Franklin Jr. High in Des Moines, and earlier in the day former Iowa Governor and current U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack went to the Ankeny Democrats headquarters to talk with campaign volunteers on the last day of work.

“My final message for Lanon Baccam is that you’re voting for an individual who will go to Washington, D.C., and he will always vote what’s in the best interests of people in his district. He is a person who, where services defines who he is. And I think they can be very comfortable that he’s going to always put their interests first,” said Vilsack. “The second thing I would say to them, thank you for voting. Thank you for being part of a democracy.”

Both Congressman Nunn and Baccam will be at their respective watch parties tomorrow as election results roll in.
