Des Moines soccer stadium one step closer to reality, Polk County approves additional funding

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Soccer Development Foundation announced on Tuesday that Polk County has approved an additional $10 million for the Pro Iowa Stadium and Global Plaza Project.

According to the foundation, the Polk County Board of Supervisors voted to contribute an additional $10 million, bringing the total contribution from the county to $17 million. The foundation also said that the Iowa Economic Development Authority approved $23.5 million in tax rebates via the Iowa Reinvestment District program.

The estimated $95 million project would create a multi-use stadium with over 6,000 seats and four acre plaza for community events and activities, all located at the former Dico Superfund site.

“This is a significant milestone for progressing the Pro Iowa Initiative,” Jeff Lorenzen, ISDF board member and chief executive officer of American Equity, said. “Securing the IRA and Polk County funding brings us one step closer to our goal. It’s a strong vote of confidence from our community partners and our state leaders — such as Gov. Kim Reynolds, IEDA and Iowa Finance Authority Director Debi Durham, and the Polk County Board of Supervisors — for showing their belief in the project and its long-term value. American Equity is proud to be one of the major supporters of this initiative.”

The foundation said it’s still working to secure the remaining $19.85 million needed for the project.
