Superheroes unite to raise awareness for Congenital Heart Disease

DES MOINES, Iowa — Superheroes took flight Sunday afternoon to raise money, awareness and create community for those battling with congenital heart disease (CHD).

The annual Des Moines Superhero Heart Run was held Saturday at the Raccoon River Park by the Help-A-Heart, a non-profit organization, along with Heart Heroes. The event featured a 5K or one miles run with those participating encouraged to dress up in their best superhero outfits.

The event brings together people dealing with CHD, often times children. Co-founder of Help-A-Heart, Emily Graber, said that 1-in-100 kids are diagnosed with some kind of heart defect at birth. Events like the Superhero Heart Run provide a space for families dealing with a similar situation to come together and create a sense of community.

The fundraising goal for the run was set at $20,000. As of Saturday before the event, over $30,000 had been raised. Those interested in donating toward the fundraiser can do so here.
