ALLAMAKEE COUNTY, Iowa — A rural Allamakee County man was killed when a landslide sent a large rock crashing into his home on Tuesday.
The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies responded to a report of a hillside that had slid down and crashed into a house in the 1100 block of Red Oak Road. When first responders arrived at the home, they discovered that multiple rocks had rolled down a hill from an adjacent property and that one large rock had crashed through the back of the house.
A resident who was inside the home at the time of the landslide was struck by the rock, the sheriff’s office said. The resident, identified as 76-year-old Michael Dan Stok, died from his injuries.
The sheriff’s office said it’s investigating the use of heavy equipment on a property located in an area above the house around the time of the landslide.
