DES MOINES, Iowa — A motorcyclist who police say Charges filed against motorcyclist in crash that killed Des Moines teenis facing charges.
Kaelin Meinders, 23, is charged with driving while barred, driving without insurance, and reckless driving. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says that Meinders hit and killed 15-year-old Santiago Rhone, a sophomore at East High School.
Santiago was a member of the Scarlet baseball team, and to honor him, the school is hosting a candle light vigil in his memory at the school baseball field at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
At the vigil, the baseball team, along with Mill Graphix, will be selling T-shirts honoring Santiago. Mills Graphix will be giving half of the proceeds to Santiago’s family.
Santiago’s family say they are remembering their late son as a vibrant and kind-hearted teenage boy, thanking the community for their outpour of love and support on social media.
Head baseball coach for East High, Justin Peters, says that Santiago’s teammates are struggling with the loss of their friend and teammate, but have rallied around Santiago’s family during this difficult time.
“I think we’re a ways away from the season. So, I think the boys are really focused on rallying around his family and being there for them as friends and community members, and I’ve been really proud of the boys and how they’ve stepped up and really helped Santiago’s family out in this crisis. You can’t ask for more from young men to step up and do that,” said Peters.
Peters also spoke about Santiago’s leadership.
“I would say one of our seniors said it right, that last year as we grew as a team. One of our seniors said, you know, the heart of our team is in that freshman class right now that are fighting hard to keep us in the games. It takes a whole, whole grade level to make sure that you are competing in the games. And that freshman class, including Santiago, was a big part of us being able to compete this year. And it’s hard to lose someone like that as a friend and as a teammate.”
Hamilton’s Funeral Home announced that on Friday, September 26, a celebration of life service will be held at noon at the Grandview little league baseball fields for Santiago. A visitation will follow until 4 p.m.
