DES MOINES, Iowa — Burlington Trailways is closing several of it’s Iowa branches, resulting in almost 80 layoffs across the state.

The Iowa Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) website, shows the closing was posted Sept. 18 and goes into affect on Oct. 18. The closures are taking place in Polk, Linn, Scott and Des Moines Counties and will affect 79 employees.

Earlier this month, Burlington Trailways announced it would end its intercity bus services on Sept. 27 due to high insurance costs and uncertain relationships with partners. The business says it will continue its tour and charter services.

Based out of West Burlington, Iowa, the company opened in 1929 as a motor-coach railroad and later developed intercity bus lines and charter services throughout the Midwest. According to the High Speed Rail Alliance, Burlington Railways offers the only east/west bus routes through much of central Illinois.

WHO 13 News has reached out to Burlington Railways for a statement but has not received a response at this time.
