OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The Oskaloosa Community School District School Board voted unanimously Wednesday evening to terminate art teacher Matthew Kargol’s contract following a Facebook post Kargol made after the Charlie Kirk assassination that said ‘one Nazi down.’
Mike Fisher, the Oskaloosa Community School District’s superintendent, said that the school board held a closed session due to Kargol requesting one.
“We did have a session to have the board consider my recommendation for termination of a continued Contract Teacher. Per the teacher’s request, we did go into closed session to review the findings of our investigation. We came back in open session and there was unanimous vote to terminate the continued contract of Mr. Matthew Kargol. The teacher at the Oskaloosa high school effective today.”
Fisher said that the district moved to fire Kargol as fast as legally possible.
“According to Iowa law, this was as fast as we can move. You cannot move faster than five days. And we had five days in there. So, we moved as expeditiously as we could while honoring the rights of all people involved,” Fisher said.
James Feudner, a Oskaloosa resident, said that he wasn’t surprised at the districts decision.
“I know Matt Kargol very well. He coached some of my kids. So, I do feel bad for him in the family. But I do think this is one of those instances. You just can’t say that kind of thing. I mean, he is, I think he lost the respect of the community. I think people could view that comment as, you know, encouraging hate and violence. So I believe with the disruption of the school, I believe that he’s going to be terminated,” Feudner said.
