TAMA COUNTY, Iowa — One person was killed after a crash which resulted in a care fire in Tama County on Saturday.
According to the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, a deputy was driving on Highway 30 near the Exit 204 interchange when they noticed heavy smoke. After arriving on scene, the deputy found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames.
Additional assistance responded to the scene which was located south of the railroad tracks, in the 3400 block of N Avenue. Authorities say due to the area being remote and hard-to-reach it was initially unclear whether anyone was inside the vehicle.
The Tama Fire Department began efforts to knock down the flames and keep it from nearby dry bush. During this time, authorities located an elderly deceased male in a deep ditch with standing water near the drivers side of the vehicle.
The Tama County Sheriff’s office has opened an investigation into the incident and has consulted with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the State Fire Marshals Office. At this time, no foul play is suspected, according to the Tama County SO.
The Tama County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Tama Fire Department, Tama Emergency Medical Services and the Tama County Medical Examiner.
The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.
