Overnight closures of I-35/80 for Hickman Interchange Project begin this weekend

GRIMES, Iowa — Overnight closures on portions of Interstate 35/80 are set to begin this weekend, with more scheduled throughout August.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the closures impact the area of I-35/80 between the Southwest Mixmaster and Highway 141 and are necessary for work on the Hickman Interchange Project.

The first closure will be for the southbound lanes of I-35/80 between the Mixmaster and Highway 141. This section of the interstate will be closed to traffic from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Sunday, August 10; Monday, August 11; and Tuesday, August 12.

Next, the northbound lanes of I-35/80 will be closed overnight Wednesday, August 13 and Thursday, August 14.

Again, the northbound lanes of this section of the interstate will be closed to motorists overnight Monday, August 18. The DOT says the northbound exit ramp should be reopened on the morning of Tuesday, August 19.

The southbound lanes of I-35/80 will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday, August 24. The southbound onramp from Hickman Road and the southbound exit ramp to University Avenue is scheduled to be reopened the morning of Monday, August 25.

The night of Monday, August 25 the southbound lanes of I-35/80 will once again be closed and then reopened the following morning.

Beginning on the morning of Wednesday, August 27, the southbound entrance ramp and loop from Douglas Avenue and the southbound exit ramp to Hickman Road will be closed and won’t be reopened until early to mid-December.

While I-35/80 is closed motorists will follow a detour utilizing I-235, 100th Street, and NW Urbandale Drive.
