JASPER COUNTY, Iowa — A Kellogg man has been charged with animal abuse for allegedly shooting at and beating a dog.
On Sunday night, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of someone abusing a dog as well as the sound of gunshots at a residence in the 300 block of East Street in Kellogg. According to the sheriff’s office, when responding deputies arrived at the home they met two individuals, 32-year-old Kerry Quick and 28-year-old Justice Goodwin.
According to court documents, deputies at the scene questioned Quick about what happened, and he told them that two of his dogs were fighting and that he hit one of the dogs with a pipe to break them up.
A criminal complaint states that several witnesses told deputies that Quick had allegedly beaten the dog with a pipe and fired a gun at the dog. The complaint goes on to say that when deputies arrived, they found the dog with a severe head wound and was seen stumbling around. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment, but ultimately died. The sheriff’s office said that x-rays showed the dog had been shot in the head.
Early Monday morning the sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant for the home. Court documents state that during the execution of the warrant they found a .22 caliber Winchester rifle that matched the description of the gun that was allegedly used to shoot at the dog.
According to the criminal complaint, when deputies again asked Quick about what happened he said that “he was angry that the dog had bit the other dog and his girlfriend, so he got the gun and shot the dog.” The complaint also states that Quick told deputies he fired one shot.
Quick was arrested and charged with one count of animal abuse and control of a firearm as a felon.
During the execution of the search warrant deputies also discovered drugs and drug paraphernalia, court documents state. Both Quick and Goodwin are also facing several drug charges.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges are anticipated.
