DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have arrested a man accused of firing a handgun within the city limits Wednesday, and he’s now facing felony charges.

Officers with the Des Moines Police Department were called to a wooded area near Vermont Street and Washington Avenue shortly before 5:00 p.m. on a report of gunfire near the Des Moines River, according to DMPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek.

When officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Paul Furey standing along the levee, apparently arguing with a woman. Furey rode away on a bicycle after noticing officers approaching.

Furey was located and stopped by officers near the 2nd Avenue Bridge. A criminal complaint filed in the case said he admitted to “possessing and firing the handgun into the ground 2-3 times.”

Sgt. Parizek said investigators found multiple shell casings at a campsite in the wooded area, and they recovered a handgun near the scene.

Court documents revealed Furey was a felon after being convicted on multiple charges in Florida, including robbery and drug possession.

Furey has been charged with felon in possession of a firearm, discharging firearms within the city limits. There are also active warrants for methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia possession.

He is being held in the Polk County Jail.
