DES MOINES, Iowa — One man was injured in an officer-involved shooting Monday night after officials said he led deputies on a chase in Webster County.
A news release from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call came in around 9:46 p.m. about a domestic disturbance in Gowrie. The caller told law enforcement that a male had been drinking alcohol and was leaving the scene in a GMC Sierra. They were also informed that the man had a gun inside his truck and may harm himself or others.
As deputies with the WCSO were on their way to the Gowrie residence, they located the man’s truck and tried to make a traffic stop. Officials said the driver refused to stop and fled, leading deputies on a chase through Dayton and the southern part of the county.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted and used stop sticks near Taylor Avenue and Highway 175 to disable one of the vehicle’s tires. A PIT maneuver was used to disable the truck near River Road and Highway 175.
As deputies approached the truck on foot, they ordered the suspect to put his hands up. The WCSO said the man reached down to the passenger seat and told deputies he was getting his gun, then made a shooting motion toward a deputy through the back window of the truck.
A WCSO deputy fired one shot through the back passenger window, hitting the suspect in the right hand. He was detained, and deputies provided medical care on the scene before an ambulance transported him to the Unity Point ER in Fort Dodge for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Law enforcement located a pistol on the driver’s side floorboard of the suspect’s truck.
The names of the suspect and the deputy involved in the shooting are not being released at this time.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave until the case has been reviewed by the Webster County Attorney’s Office, which is WCSO policy.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
