Grimes man accused of critically injuring 3-month-old infant

GRIMES, Iowa — A Grimes man has been accused of critically injuring a 3-month-old infant in early March.

On March 7, nurses at a Des Moines hospital contacted the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) after a 3-month-old was admitted to the emergency room with critical injuries. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the infant’s injuries included broken bones and a brain bleed. The infant was later life-flighted to Iowa City for further treatment.

The sheriff’s office said an investigation into how the injuries occurred was launched shortly after the infant was hospitalized. The investigation spanned three weeks and on Monday resulted in the arrest of the infant’s father — Brett Pettit, 33.

Pettit was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of child endangerment with serious injury and neglect of a dependent person.
