Natural gas believed to be cause of house explosion on Des Moines south side

DES MOINES, Iowa– Three people escaped uninjured in a house explosion that happened Sunday morning on Des Moines’ south side.

Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department, said it happened shortly after 11:00 a.m. at home in the 4300 block of SE 11th Street. The explosion caused significant structural damage to the home.

A preliminary investigation by DMPD and the Des Moines Fire Department indicates a significant contributing factor in the explosion was a natural gas flow within the home. Sgt. Parizek said there may have been a valve in the basement that was accidentally opened.
