Ben McCollum, the recently-hired head coach of the University of Iowa men’s basketball team, has won at every stop of his coaching career, and dressing for success means ditching the sport coat but still looking professional.
“I used to wear different ties, shirts and pants and realized I was terrible at matching,” McCollum said.
What was thought to be a lack of fashion savvy turned into a signature outfit.
“It reminds me a lot of old clips when I used to watch basketball with my dad,” Iowa student Regan Grimm said.
In an era where college basketball coaches have gone more casual, McCollum still dresses to impress. Every game day, he wears a white dress shirt and solid-colored tie.
“People in other professions have to dress with a level of professionalism. I’ve always thought that that’s what I’ve needed to wear to act like a pro,” McCollum said.
“And then it becomes comfortable, and then you get superstitious, but at least it looks good.”
Look good, coach good. Fans of McCollum have bought in.
“I’m a freshman here but I have full confidence that we’re going to be winning in March Madness before I graduate,” Iowa student Draven Murdi said.
Students will buy into it, as will the general fan.
“It’ll be an exciting time; I’m curious to see how many people show up in the fall wearing this,” Iowa student Zach Lapeire added.
Coming off a year where attendance was its lowest in over 50 years, Iowa Athletic Director Beth Goetz wanted to hire a coach who could get fans back in seats.
“The filling up of Carver from a business perspective is really critically important — I can’t deny that, but I think that’s an outcome of what happens when you build that connection,” Goetz said.
A 13-time conference champ, McCollum’s already proven he can win games and fanbases — whether he’s an Iowa fashion icon or not.
“I guess it’s a pretty cool fashion statement; at least they look good,” McCollum said.
