Des Moines cuts neighborhood mosquito spraying, decreases other abatement

DES MOINES, Iowa – The buzz and hum of mosquitoes in the metro could make a sharp increase in Des Moines this summer.

Planned budget cuts have the city discontinuing most of its mosquito abatement program. Crews will make one larvicide application to ponds and other bodies of water, but you won’t see the spray trucks driving through neighborhoods this year.

The city will also no longer monitor or test mosquitoes.

The move is expected to save the city $300,000 as it attempts to shave some $17 million from its budget.
