Today’s drought monitor shows improvement over last week, but still the need for more precipitation. We do have some in the forecast.

Sky watchers: lost in all the noise about storms tomorrow is the fact that we have a full lunar eclipse on tap tonight if you’re willing to stay up late.

Lows will be mild, setting us up for a warm day on Friday.

It will be a windy one Friday ahead of our storm chances, with both a wind advisory and fire weather watch in effect!

The Storm Prediction Center’s outlook for tomorrow is below, showing enhanced risks for strong storms in central and eastern Iowa.

The next three images show a strong and deepening area of low pressure at the surface Friday afternoon, with air fanning out at the top of the troposphere and a good area of rotation moving in at the mid-levels of the atmosphere … all good ingredients for strong storms.

Colorado State’s severe weather algorithm also point to potential in our area tomorrow:

The following two images show output from two different short-range computer models, each showing storms firing by 4-5 p.m. Friday over central and western Iowa. The main threats will come from wind and hail, though embedded tornadoes can’t be ruled out, especially over eastern Iowa.

Rain may linger into the early morning hours on Saturday. Amounts will not be heavy.

There is a small chance we’ll see a little snow late afternoon/early evening Saturday, with a better chance late Wednesday into Thursday.
