WINTERSET, Iowa — If you didn’t know better, it might be easy to mistake the rolling hills of this Winterset farm for the foothills of the Andes Mountains in South America.

That’s because this farm is full of alpacas.

It all started with just a couple of alpacas and a sign at the end of the driveway inviting people to stop by and see, feed, and pet the alpacas. Now, around 50 of the animals can be found on the farm, plus one llama.

Visitors are able to visit for free and feed the alpacas, staying as long as they’d like. Friendlier alpacas allow visitors to pet them, but most interactions are on the alpacas’ terms. While alpacas are known for spitting, co-owner of Rusty Stars Aron Shultz says alpacas mainly spit to communicate with others of their kind, and they don’t spit as often as some think.

Rusty Stars Alpacas also offers alpaca yoga when the weather is nice, and they do alpaca hikes around the property. Over the last few years, they’ve also partnered with the Blank Park Zoo to bring an alpaca experience to visitors in Des Moines.

Rusty Stars can properly call themselves a farm though — they shear their alpacas and then collect the fiber to make yarn. This yarn is sold at the alpaca store on-site, and you can even see which alpaca the yarn came from. There are also other garments and pieces of clothing made from alpaca fiber in the store.
