DES MOINES, Iowa – After a week of brutal cold, warm — practically springlike weather — is on the way to central Iowa!

Temperatures have been extremely cold over the last week. Morning lows during the work week have been below zero, with the coldest morning on Tuesday being a frigid -11°. Wind chills dropped to -30°.

Friday begins the warmup, but by normal standards, it will still feel cold. Temperatures rise to the upper teens by the afternoon and wind chills reach the single digits above zero. Overnight lows only drop to the upper single digits, a positive change compared to conditions over the last week. Highs start to recover quite a bit by Saturday afternoon, reaching the low 30s.

Temperatures keep rising through the weekend, but warmer and more humid air will bring the potential for fog on Sunday. Visibilities will be near zero through Sunday morning and into the early afternoon. The skies should clear out by the afternoon.

As our warming trend continues, highs soar to the low 40s by Sunday and into the 50s for the first half of next week. That’s over a 60° warmup compared to our morning lows on Tuesday! Warmer weather looks to remain in place through the rest of the month and into early March.
