The cold air that began moving in Saturday afternoon has given us temperatures below what we saw yesterday despite the sunshine. Your weather timeline takes us through our first snow chance in a while and into Tuesday:

It’ll be a cold overnight under partly cloudy skies. Be sure to dress the kiddos appropriately for the morning bus ride!

The first of three rounds of snow this week moves in Monday evening and dissipates early Tuesday morning as frigid air moves into Iowa. Amounts will be fairly light by Tuesday’s a.m. drive.

Most computer models, as seen below, are giving the Des Moines metro area about a quarter inch to an inch of snow by early Tuesday.

Bitter cold wind chills will follow the snow. Cold air sticks around through Thursday.

The second snow chance of the week looks to start early Wednesday morning and end late Wednesday night. At this point 3-6″ of additional snowfall seem likely.

Saturday’s snow chance now looks to start Valentines Day evening, and model tracks are bringing it farther north. We’ll keep an eye on it as the week progresses.

Looking at the vertical columns of colored snow totals below, there seems to be agreement among the European model ensemble members regarding the likelihood of these snow chances. It also appears we could see more snow the following week. Winter isn’t over yet!

Turning to temperatures, highs for the next six days follow. The extended forecasts below indicate we’ll continue to see cold temps and a likelihood of precipitation through the 23rd of the month.
