DES MOINES, Iowa — People gathered on World Hijab Day to learn more about the Muslim practice and the history behind the hijab.

February 1 is World Hijab Day which celebrates Muslim women and the practice of covering their hair by wearing a hijab. Founded in 2013 by Nazma Khan, the day acts as a way to educate people about the practice of wearing a hijab and the significance it holds.

A celebration was held at the West Des Moines Library on Saturday and organizers say it helps combat religious discrimination and clears up misconceptions about the head covering.

During the event various booths shared information and provided demonstrations for people curious to try one on.

Mais Homedan, a Masjid Sahabah representative, is proud to be sharing her religious traditions with others.

“It definitely makes me really happy. I love when people ask me questions and it’s just it’s great to see other peoples, like views on what they know about Islam,” said Homedan. “It’s great, it’s good to meet people and it’s good to have a good conversation with them.”

The celebration comes ahead of Ramdan, a Muslim holiday of self-reflection where people fast, pray, and spend time with their community.
