DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department had out extra patrols last night and responded to 288 calls, including a hit and run incident and a shooting.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, between 8 p.m. on New Years Eve and 6 a.m. on New Years Day the DMPD phone range more than 400 times, sending 288 officers on calls.

This is an 10% increase over the 2024 New Years Eve period.

Police say preliminary numbers indicate a decrease in firework complaints, fight complaints, disputes and domestic disturbances. Police say that complaints regarding gunfire increased.

Police say during a party located at the 1900 block of East Bell Avenue an adult male was shot. Authorities say his injures are not life threatening and an investigation has been open into the incident.

Officers that were stationed on foot to monitor the Court Avenue Entertainment District report thousands of people flooded the area to celebrate.

According to police, a fight occurred during a bar closing at 3rd Street and Court Avenue. Assistance was called in from surrounding areas and the fight was resolved.

The DMPD Traffic Unit, placed to monitor the roadways for unsafe and impaired drivers, issued nearly 40 citations and warnings and arrested two individuals with OWI charges.

Police are continuing their investigation and search after a hit and run that occurred in the 600 block of East 29th Street, when a vehicle lost control and crashed into a home. Police say the persons inside the home were not injured.

Throughout the night four arrests were made.
