2 Des Moines teens charged in drive-by shooting investigation

DES MOINES, IOWA — Two teenagers are facing charges related to a drive-by shooting early this week that left a Des Moines home riddled with bullet holes.

The shooting happened on Monday in the Watrous Heights neighborhood on the south side of Des Moines, according to police. More than 30 rounds were fired at a home from a passing vehicle and “nearly a dozen” shots hitting the house, police say. Three different caliber guns were used in the shooting.

No one in the home, including two children, were injured in the shooting.

Des Moines Police say surveillance video and social media led them to an initial suspect: 19-year-old Bryan Rainey. Rainey was taken into custody and police found a gun in his pants. At Rainey’s home, police found a second suspect – 18-year-old Hamid Lula. Lula was found in possession of two firearms.

Des Moines Police believe Rainey and two other people took part in the drive-by shooting on Monday. Those two other suspects have not been identified and Lula is not charged in relation the shooting.

Rainey’s list of charges includes:

  • Intimidation With A Dangerous Weapon
  • Going Armed With Intent
  • Conspiracy To Commit A Forcible Felony
  • Interference With Official Acts – Firearm
  • Persons Ineligible To Carry Dangerous Weapons

Lula is charged with:

  • Persons Ineligible To Carry Dangerous Weapons
  • Possession Of A Controlled Substance – Marijuana
