DES MOINES – The Salvation Army of Des Moines is currently raising money for its Annual Red Kettle Campaign with a goal of raising $1.2 million dollars.
On Thursday when counting donations, the Salvation Army found that someone had donated a solid gold South African Krugerrand coin worth an estimated $2800.
Chrissy Brabandt, a Board Member of the Salvation Army in Des Moines, said that her family found the coin while counting donations.
“Every Thursday evening, my family and I count kettles as a board member, and my son – who’s 16 – was going through his kettle and he was like: ‘Mom, I found a $100 bill’ … which is a really big deal usually,” Brabandt said, “And I was like: ‘Oh, nice, buddy, I hope I find one too.’ And then he found another $100 bill. And then he found the trifecta. He found a gold coin, a Krugerrand, which is worth probably about $2,800 right now.”.
The Salvation Army has currently raised just under $500,000 of its $1.2 Million goal. To donate to the Red Kettle Campaign, go to the Salvation Army website.
