Teen charged with arson in former Marshalltown hospital fire

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A juvenile has been charged for allegedly starting a fire at the former Marshalltown hospital Wednesday afternoon.

At around 1:10 p.m. the Marshalltown Fire Department and Police Department responded to a report of a fire at the former hospital at 3 South 4th Avenue. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found white smoke coming from the center of the complex.

According to authorities, firefighters stretched horizontal standpipe across the roof of the building so they could enter a stairwell and access the fire. The fire was extinguished and didn’t extend past the room where the fire started. No one was inside the building and no injuries were reported.

A preliminary investigation into the fire found that it had been started intentionally, authorities said. A 16-year-old male has been taken into custody and charged with the following in connection to the fire:

  • Arson, 2nd Degree
  • Criminal Mischief, 1st Degree
  • Theft, 5th Degree
  • Interference with Official Acts
