URBANDALE, Iowa — A portion of the I-80/35 interstate spanning from I-235 to Exit 127 in Urbandale is under construction, which has caused some commuters traffic trouble.

The project aims to add an extra lane to the portion of the interstate and is expected to finish construction in August of 2025, however, plans to redo the Hickman interchange that bisects the construction zone will cause traffic disruptions until 2028.

Tammy Skinner, a commuter who routinely drives through the Hickman interchange, said she is not looking forward to more years of construction.

“Kind of dreading the next couple of years with all the construction. End goal will be great, but it’s going to kind of be a pain,” Skinner said.

Renee Parsons, a commuter who takes the interstate to work, said that she avoids the Hickman interchange due to traffic.

“So I tend to avoid it most mornings and get on at like Douglas or even over by like the Super Target on Plum. Um, yeah, it tends to feel a little scary getting on there,” Parsons said.

Tony Ekman, another Hickman interchange commuter, said that he is used to construction around the Des Moines metro and is looking forward to the finished project.

“You’re always going to have an inconvenience if you want something better. So, you know, if it’s not challenging, you’re not making it any better,” Ekman said.
