Assault suspect rescued from Des Moines River after running from police

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man is behind bars on Wednesday after allegedly assaulting a food delivery driver and running into the Des Moines River while fleeing from police.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, at around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday a 31-year-old male reported to police that he was assaulted in the 300 block of West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway while he was making a food delivery. The victim told officers he had been kicked and suffered a minor injury.

When officers arrived at the scene the man identified as the suspect, 32-year-old Nicolas Shane Hughes, ran, DMPD said. Officers followed him until he entered the Des Moines River near Market Street and Water Street.

The Des Moines Fire Department Water Emergency Team was called in to assist officers in getting Hughes out of the river. After about 30 minutes the Water Emergency Team was able to help Hughes out of the water. Hughes was treated for cold exposure at a hospital.

On Wednesday morning Hughes was booked into the Polk County Jail for charges of Assault Causing Injury, Interference With Official Acts, and unrelated drug offense warrants.
