NORWALK, Iowa — Santa thinks of every boy and girl during the holidays and Sunday he held a special sensory friendly event in Norwalk.
The normal Santa Meet and Greets that are held during the holidays may be too much for those who have sensory issues, so the Norwalk Santa came up with a solution.
Families were able to book a private session that lasted 15 minutes where they interacted with Santa in a quiet and safe environment.
“We do strictly appointment only, we don’t have to many people here, it’s quiet and peaceful,” said Santa. “We’ve got sensory friendly toys all around the room they can play with and then they can take pictures with Santa.”
The event was held at the Norwalk Public Library and lasted from 9 a.m. to 1p.m., the 15-minute session also had 5-minute breaks in between so nobody was rushed.
This is the first year that Santa has held the event and Santa wanted to be sure that everyone had a good time and felt comfortable.
“This is the first time doing Sensory Santa, so we are all excited,” said Santa “I got sensory certified to do this, to make sure that everyone is safe and there were no problems.”
Santa hopes that those who partake in the event are able to enjoy an aspect of the holiday season they might normally have to miss out on.
“Smiles! The goal is smiles, to have them have a good time and remember Santa, and to feel comfortable. Thats what we’re after, so they can see Santa in a safe, comfortable atmosphere”
The event also acted as fundraising for the Norwalk Santa. He has adopted 19 families this year and is able to bring them holiday cheer through the community’s help.
Leading up to the event Santa accepted sensory friendly toy donations which he is now donating to the Norwalk School District teachers.
