CLARKE COUNTY, Iowa — A New Virginia resident is in critical condition after being shot in his driveway Thursday afternoon.
At around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting with a victim in the 1000 block of 315th Avenue in rural Clarke County, just northeast of Liberty. According to the sheriff’s office, when first responders arrived at the residence they found a 35-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, a resident of New Virginia, was transported to a Des Moines hospital via air ambulance in critical condition.
According to a criminal complaint, 32-year-old George William Douglas made the 911 claiming he had shot the victim in the driveway of the victim’s residence. The complaint also states that Douglas told law enforcement multiple times that the victim had recently given him bad drugs.
The sheriff’s office said Douglas was taken into custody at his residence in the 3000 block of Pacific Street in Woodburn, southeast of Liberty. Douglas has been charged with Attempted Murder, Going Armed with Intent, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Major Crime Unit is assisting the sheriff’s office with the investigation.
