IOWA FALLS, Iowa – If you’re looking for things to do as the winter months set in, one historic theater has made a habit out of adapting with the times.
The Metropolitan Opera House in Iowa Falls first opened in 1899. The building was intended to look like a miniature version of the famous “Met” in New York City. While that building (also known as the Old Metropolitan Opera House) was demolished in 1967, its imitation still stands. At first, the Iowa Falls building was a one-room theater that hosted live performances. A ticket for the first show cost $2.50!
Through the years, the theater has adapted. Live shows were replaced with black-and-white films. Color films were later added. Today, the Metropolitan Opera House has two movie theaters with digital projectors.
The building has had several owners through the years and has required repairs and updates. The most original aspect of the building is its exterior.
In addition to the theaters, the second floor has a room that can be rented for events. The third floor of the building was a ballroom and has essentially been untouched over the years.
Now, movie tickets cost $7.50, five dollars more than in 1899 but still far less than many theaters today. The Metropolitan Opera House is open Tuesday through Sunday. You can find more details and information on current showings on their website here.
