MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — An elderly woman was found dead after firefighters extinguished a house fire in Marshalltown Monday afternoon.
At around 1 p.m. the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire in the 1400 block of South Center Street. When firefighters arrived on scene they found a fire in the living room area of the home.
Once firefighters extinguished the flames, they located an elderly female dead near the area of the fire, the Marshalltown Fire Department said. The victim’s identity and cause of death have not been released.
Marshalltown police detectives and Iowa Arson and Explosives Bureau special agents were called in for the investigation, according to the fire department. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
The Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office, Alliant Energy, and UnityPoint EMS also assisted the department at the scene.
