Des Moines International Airport introduces sunflower program to assist travelers with hidden disabilities

DES MOINES, Iowa — It’s that time of the year when people are traveling the most, navigating busy airports, TSA issues, and flight cancellations. But imagine trying to navigate the stress of traveling in an airport with a hidden disability — that’s where the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program comes in handy. It’s a global initiative that provides support and awareness for individuals with non-visible disabilities.

The airport is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association and ChildServe to introduce this program to the Des Moines area. The program provides travelers with non-visible disabilities a discreet way to indicate they may need extra assistance or patience while traveling.

“Hopefully it makes travel more accessible to them so that it removes the stress or the fear of the inaccessibility that may be perceived today,” said Des Moines Airport Authority Executive Director, Kevin Foley. “If they know that they will be handled with kindness and patience they will be more willing to travel. Travel should be accessible to absolutely everyone, and that’s what this program attempts to achieve.”

Those wanting to get a sunflower lanyard can contact the Alzheimer’s Association or ChildServe to find out how to acquire one. Lanyards can also be purchased on the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower’s website.
