Iowa voters endure rain, long lines to cast their ballot

ADEL, Iowa — For Dallas County Auditor Julia Helm Monday, the day before Election Day, was hectic to say the least.

The auditor and all her employees were busy. Helm was helping get the paperwork where it needed to be. Crews with giant trailers loaded with voting machines could be seen with “Dallas County Auditor” on the side.

Outside the elections office a line stretched from out the front door of the building, and stretched down the block to the east.

“Get done early, first time in 72 years really, so excited about this, excited, but my legs are tired ” said Douglas Fox from Booneville. “We’ve been here an hour and a half.”

“Voting is extremely important and especially important this year so I’m happy to be out here. I don’t mind waiting,” said Kathleen Tierney, of West Des Moines. “This is definitely the longest line I’ve seen, but this is the first time I’m voting early in person as well.”

There were also some reports of people getting time off from their employer to go vote.

“I have the time today because my work told me that I should use the time to go vote,” said Lisa Sobotka, of Granger. “I’ll be going to the polling place tomorrow because my daughter is 18 and so I will be attending with her.”

One woman here saw the long line, and decided to wait until Election Day.

“I thought about going but then when I saw the line I changed my mind and I think I’ll take my chances tomorrow to go to my polling place,” said Beth Finn, of Adel.
