Groundbreaking ceremony held for affordable housing development at former Plaza Lanes site

DES MOINES, Iowa — A lack of affordable housing is putting Polk County families at risk of homelessness, and city and county leaders are trying to respond to the shortage. On Monday a groundbreaking ceremony was held for what will soon be the Alley Landing Development.

The project is being built where the old Plaza Lanes once stood along Douglas Avenue. It will offer 40 affordable rental units ranging from one to three bedrooms. Units will be reserved for residents up to 50 and 60% of the area median income. Eight units set will be set aside as permanent supportive housing. Rental assistance will also be available for residents experiencing homelessness, which will prioritize veterans.

“I’m really proud that this is happening in ward one, in Des Moines, in Lower Beaver, all groups that want to be a welcoming community to the people who really need a little help and who need government on their side,” Chris Coleman, Des Moines ward one councilmember, said. “So, when we think about projects like this, that have an affordable housing component to it, it makes me really proud that we’re following through on our commitment that government can be there for the people that most need it.”

Mayor Connie Boesen also spoke about the significance of the project.

“The Alley Landing Development is not just about building apartments, it’s about building a brighter future for our community,” she said. “It’s a place where families can thrive, individuals can find stability, and our community can grow stronger together.”

The developers, Woda Cooper Companies, said they’re prioritizing the amenities of the units, with each having in-unit washer and dryers, dishwashers, and nice community spaces like a fenced dog park, playground, and controlled access to the building.
