DES MOINES, Iowa — There is new life ready to take shape at the site of a former Des Moines landmark.

In the early morning hours of December 18, 2017, firefighters were called out to Plaza Lanes along Douglas Avenue. In just a few hours the building was completely ravaged by the blaze. The owners chose not to rebuild after the fire.

Monday, a ceremonial groundbreaking is set for a new affordable housing apartment project being built at the site. When construction is complete, Alley Landing will have 40 affordable housing units. There will be one, two, and three-bedroom apartments for those up to 50% and 60% of the area median income.

Eight of the units will be set aside as Permanent Supportive Housing units with rental assistance for people experiencing homelessness with a priority for veterans.

The property will have a fenced-in dog park and a playground and there is a supportive services office on site.

The groundbreaking ceremony starts at 2:00 p.m. at 2701 Douglas Avenue.
