Science Center of Iowa opens reimagined exhibit space

DES MOINES, Iowa — After closing for about two months, one of the Science Center of Iowa’s most popular spaces is back open — and it’s refreshed and reimagined.

The “When Things Get Moving” exhibit was designed to make the concepts of physics come alive. Scattered throughout the space are boards explaining how each interactive area works and the science behind it. The boards invite learners to ask questions and experiment to gain a fuller understanding of the concepts.

Popular spots like the rocket launcher and ball wall are back, but they’ve been refreshed and enhanced. There are also new areas, like spinning chairs that are practically impossible to topple over, a “pressure launch” that allows participants to use the force of a dropping bowling ball to launch a tennis ball, and a space to make water vapor rings in the air.

The exhibit also brings new lighting and paint to give the space a fresher feel. Director of Marketing and Public Relations Amy Hock says it’s by far the biggest renovation or upgrade any space has seen since the Science Center moved to its current location in 2005.
