More details released in 2 separate Des Moines shootings Sunday, 1 arrested

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have provided more information about two separate shootings that resulted in two people being hospitalized Sunday night, and one person being arrested.

Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said the first investigation began around 6:43 p.m. when a 24-year-old man showed up at the UnityPoint-Iowa Lutheran emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Sgt. Parizek said his injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators determined he was shot by his girlfriend, 24-year-old Dalia Mendiola, during an argument at a residence in the 500 block of Walker Street. A criminal complaint filed in the case said the victim went into the bathroom and shut the door during the argument, and Mendiola allegedly shot through the door when the victim refused to open it.

The complaint said Mendiola accompanied the victim to the hospital and later admitted to the shooting in a statement to police after being advised of her Miranda rights.

Mendiola is charged with willful injury causing serious injury and domestic abuse assault with a weapon. She is being held in the Polk County Jail on a bond of $20,000. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 24th.

Sgt. Parizek said the second shooting investigation began around 7:08 p.m. after the victim, a 26-year-old man, arrived at MercyOne-Des Moines. He was suffering from multiple gunshot injuries to his legs but is expected to survive.

Police say the victim was uncooperative, but investigators were able to locate the scene of the shooting in the 1500 block of 17th Street.
