REDFIELD, Iowa — It’s been one year since a fire destroyed the Dexfield Diner & Pub, and the business is slowly rebuilding.
In February 2024 a fire ripped through the Dexfield Diner & Pub, leaving the business destroyed and leaving the community in shock. A year later, the business has been staying afloat and working on some upgrades.
Steve Roberts, the owner of the diner, says they have been able to repair the roof and the garage door in the back of the building but still have a long way to go. He says the rebuild will allow them to make some improvements.
“We’re going to do a lot of updating, a lot of expanding the patio out as you walked over there, the back door, we put a garage door so we can have outdoor seating and stuff, which will be nice, but we’ve got a lot of great ideas,” said Roberts.
The business has kept a steady flow of income by operating through a food trailer that Roberts opened up last year and ran until the weather got too cold. At the end of last month, operations moved into a temporary location located at 1119 Thomas Street in Redfield.
“I caught wind through Facebook and social media and people talking that the bar that was here was getting ready to shut down. So, of course, my brain started working. Well, if they’re going to shut down, what are they going to do with the building? So, I reached out to the owners of the building and asked them if I could rent up month to month until our building was done,” said Roberts.
Roberts says they’ve been dealing with fire and insurance problems but hopes to have the diner back up and running sometime this year.
