DES MOINES, Iowa — Fong’s Pizza has announced the new resident for their restaurant in downtown Des Moines, and it’s got quite the history.
Fong’s announced their move to the former Peace Tree Brewing location earlier this month, and while most people are excited for the change, many wondered what would become of the 4th street restaurant.
In a press release on Friday, Full Court Press announced they will open The Empire. Inspired by The Empire Tavern which opened in 1905 in the same location, the new restaurant will return the space to its original design.
The Empire was discovered while replacing flooring when the original tile work was uncovered, revealing the name “The Empire” embedded in the tile. This discovery helped steer Full Court Press to their newest restaurant idea.
“The hope is that The Empire can be remodeled and restored to what we think it looked like in 1905. The walls will be adorned in historical photos of downtown as well as photos and history related to the rich history of the Elliot Hotel,” read a part of the statement.
The statement says The Empire will serve coffee, pastries, and select breakfast items in the morning. They will have a lunch menu consisting of comfort foods including hot beef sandwiches, calzones, meatloaf and more. They will also have heartier meals at night including prime rib and lasagna.
“The bar will be supplied with mostly traditional American beer brands as well as a few local craft beers. There will be a large selection of whiskies as well as a turn-of-the-century cocktail menu,” part of the statement reads.
The release indicated The Empire will still be designed to serve downtown, but in a different way than its previous inhabitant.
“The new rendition of The Empire will be a space dedicated to the downtown residents and workers of the area through affordable comfort food and affordable drinks, the hope is that the residents of this area can call The Empire home and frequent it several times a week.”
The release doesn’t say when The Empire will be opening their doors.
