DES MOINES, Iowa – The old federal courthouse located at 123 East Walnut Avenue is headed to auction on March 3rd and local residents have some ideas on what should replace it.
According to the listing, the nearly 100-year-old courthouse is 97,470 square feet and bidding with start at $60,000.
Residents of the East Village neighborhood in Des Moines have lots of ideas for what could replace the courthouse.
Karissa Donaldson, an East Village resident, said she would prefer the courthouse to be turned into a retail space and venue for nightlife.
“Maybe some retail, some restaurants, nightlife options would be exciting to have more of here in the East Village,” Donaldson said.
Brandon Farhat, an East Village resident, said he would like to see the courthouse turned into an event space.
“It would be cool to see maybe some event space or like a world food market” Farhat said.
The new Federal Courthouse located at 111 Locust Street is set to open this spring.
