Extreme cold settles into Iowa; more snow Monday

IOWA — Some of the coldest air of the season is settling over Central Iowa. We started the work week Monday morning with temperatures and wind chills both below zero and they will go colder. An arctic high-pressure system is bringing the coldest weather of the year so far.

An Extreme Cold Warning will be in place from 9 PM Monday through Noon Tuesday. This is the time frame when widespread wind chills in northern Iowa may drop to -30 to -35.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in place for the same time frame for southern Iowa for widespread wind chills of -15 to -25.

Here’s a look at sample wind chills today through Tuesday morning.

The cold arctic high is keeping snow mainly south of Iowa, but an area of light to moderate snow will move across southwest and southern Iowa today bringing 1 to 2″ to those counties. There is a Winter Weather Advisory in those areas. Some light snow may brush through Des Moines.
