Altoona FD fight challenging conditions in morning fire

ALTOONA, Iowa — The Altoona Fire Department battled “challenging conditions” during a Saturday morning house fire.

According to the Altoona Fire Department, at approximately 5:16 a.m. crews were dispatched to the 400 block of 22nd Avenue SW on reports of a residential fire.

Crews arrived on scene and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the home’s garage and front porch areas. According to authorities, crew began an aggressive attack from the exterior.

Crews were then able to enter the home to fight the fire on the interior and perform a search of the home for possible trapped victims.

Three adults, one child, two dogs were home at the time of the fire but made it safely outside of the home before the emergency crews’ arrival. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Authorities say battling the fire proved to be challenging due to freezing temperatures, a north wind, and the fire breaching into the attic spaces above the garage and living areas.

The first fire hydrant crews attempted to connect to during the fire was found to be frozen. Crews were able to locate a second operational fire hydrant nearby and proceed with their efforts.

Altoona FD was assisted by Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, and Ankeny Fire Departments and the Altoona Police Department.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation. According to authorities, a preliminary investigation into the cause does not appear to be suspicious.
