ADEL, Iowa — After a record-setting number of snowplows were hit during Wednesday’s winter storm, the Iowa Department of Transportation is sharing important reminders for drivers as more winter weather approaches Central Iowa this weekend.

Iowa has around 900 plows that help remove snow and ice across the state during the winter months. However, it has been a rough winter for the orange trucks.

According to a post by the DOT, 15 plows were hit by other drivers on the roads on Wednesday. The total number of plows hit this season is 25.

As a result, the DOT is reminding drivers that when blue, white, and amber lights can be seen, a snow plow is likely near. These plows typically drive slow, usually between 10 and 35 miles per hour, so it’s important for drivers to be prepared to slow down.

Plows also create snow clouds behind them. These clouds can drastically limit visibility. Iowa DOT shared this Facebook post which shows a video of what a snow cloud looks like.

Driving slow and with caution are the best ways to avoid accidents during winter weather.
