DES MOINES, Iowa – A quick round of snow is possible this afternoon, with more snow accumulation possible Saturday.

Temperatures dropped back to the single digits overnight. The first half of Friday starts out quiet before snow chances return this afternoon. A quick burst of snow will be possible across the state, making for slick conditions as kids head home from school and into the evening commute. A messier weather system arrives Saturday, bringing the potential for snow throughout the day. A heavier band of snow could develop northwest of the metro, causing an area of higher totals. More mixed precipitation will be possible in southern Iowa.

Friday’s system will not last long but could bring an intense burst of snow in a brief period. One to two inches of snow will be possible, and it will be fluffier snow similar to what we saw earlier this week.

Saturday’s system will last longer and drop more snow. By the end of the day, 2-4″ will be possible across the state with an elevated area northwest of the metro where higher totals are expected, closer to the 5-8″ range. This snow will also be heavier and wetter compared to what we saw earlier in the week. Note that the area of higher totals could shift north or south, which would affect who sees the highest impacts from this system.

Another inch or two of snow is possible Monday into Tuesday. Bitterly cold air settles in for most of next week, dropping highs to the single digits and lows to the double digits below zero!
