DES MOINES, Iowa — Black ice on the roads is making travel in the Des Moines metro tricky Thursday morning.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is reporting multiple accidents on interstates:

• The right lane of I-80 eastbound between Merle Hay Road and the Des Moines River Bridge(near Urbandale) is blocked because of a multi-vehicle crash as of 6:51 a.m.
• The left lane of I-80 westbound at the Douglas Avenue exit in Urbandale is blocked due to a crash as of 6:51 a.m.
• The right shoulder of I-80 westbound between 60th Street and Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines is blocked because of a stalled vehicle as of 6:51 a.m.
• The right shoulder of I-80 eastbound between 2nd Aveenu and US 69 near Des Moines is blocked due to a stalled vehicle as of 6:51 a.m.
• The left lane of I-235 westbound is blocked at 3rd Street in Des Moines due to a crash as of 6:56 a.m.
• The left lane of I-235 eastbound at 3rd Street in Des Moines is blocked due to a stalled vehicle as of 6:51 a.m.

Information on injuries related to the crashes reported by the Iowa DOT has not been released.

The Des Moines Police Department says it has been busy responding to crashes. Ten crashes have been reported on I-235 since 6:00 a.m. There were no injuries.

With metro road still partially snow and ice-covered after Wednesday’s winter storm, drivers should operate cautiously and leave enough room to slow down and stop safely. Black ice conditions are dangerous because the ice glaze left on the road is transparent.
