DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department has released the name of the suspect who was shot and killed by officers in early February.
According to DMPD, the shooting occurred at around 8:41 p.m. on February 6 in the 1200 block of Maury Street during an ongoing methamphetamine trafficking investigation. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old David Leroy Kintz Jr., was a passenger in a vehicle under surveillance by DMPD’s Narcotics Section.
Police said Kintz exited the vehicle and began walking down Maury Street when he was stopped by two uniformed DMPD officers. As the officers attempted to detain Kintz he produced a handgun and a confrontation ensued, resulting in the officers firing their weapons, police said.
Kintz was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The officers involved were Senior Police Officer Neal Shaffer, who’s been with the department since 2018, and Senior Police Officer Titus Deford, who’s been with the department since 2020. Both have been placed on administrative assignment.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is continuing the investigation into the shooting.
