DES MOINES, Iowa — As we head into the night the Iowa State Patrol is warning drivers that conditions will worsen, and help will be restricted.

“We’re going to continue to see the roads have that sheet of black ice. These roads are going to continue to get more slick throughout the night,” said Sergeant Alex Dinkla, Iowa State Patrol.

Since this morning the Iowa State Patrol has responded to almost 300 calls. According to the Iowa State Patrol, salting crews have been experiencing issues which could cause worsening conditions.

“One of the struggles is the Department of Transportation and many other crews are having a tough time putting down any product off the road to with these cold conditions,” said Dinkla. “It’s too cold for those active ingredients to be able to melt the ice.”

As we head into the night, the Iowa State Patrol reminds drivers that due to tow bans, drivers who crash or become stuck will not be able to get help.

“If you do become stranded, you’re putting yourself at risk. You’re also putting many other drivers at risk,” said Dinkla. “We’re continuing to see motorists out here driving maybe 30 miles an hour, but at times that’s even too fast.”

According to Sergeant Dinkla, the Iowa DOT and Iowa State Patrol will continue overnight to keep roads available and open for morning commuters.

“Leave with enough time to get to your location safely and plan for delays. We’ve seen it all today. The interstates have been open, but many times they’re closed and we’re trying to get those open as quickly as possible.”
