DES MOINES, Iowa — A semi crashed into a concrete barrier on I-80 in northeast Des Moines Wednesday morning, causing the interstate to be shut down briefly in both directions.

Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol said the crash happened at 10:20 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80, just east of Highway 69. A semi driver lost control on the snowy road and the truck crashed into the center concrete barrier.

The driver was not injured, but the truck blocked the far left lane of eastbound travel.

The crash also caused issues in the westbound lanes of I-80 because concrete chunks from the barrier broke off into the traveled portion of the road.

Sgt. Dinkla said both directions of I-80 where the crash happened were closed for a short time as the DOT used its plows to clear the broken concrete.

Traffic is moving again in both directions and the two left lanes of eastbound travel were re-opened just before 11:30 a.m. after the crashed semi was towed.

Roads remain snow-covered in the area and drivers are advised to operate with caution.
